"Mike Schow, Vice Commander of the Stephen H. Nipp Veterans Post 143, Post Falls, presides over last Friday's inspiring ceremony in downtown Post Falls. A host of dignitaries including Mrs. Fred Plonske, mother of Stephen Nipp; Mayor Kent Helmer, Kootenai County Commissioner Frank Henderson, State Rep. Hilde Kellogg, along with members of Disabled American Veterans from Post Falls as well as Priest River, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the local VFW Auxiliary. An Added touch of dignity occurred during the 30-minute performance when the rainy skies parted for the sun to shine on the somber occasion. The ceremony ended with Tracy Bartlett and Dean Goodwin of the Post Falls Sr. High band playing the National Anthem and Taps. Meanwhile, in an equally impressive ceremony, Spokane attorney and ex-POW James Shively told students of Lakeland High School of the value of American freedom and the importance of fighting for it. Shively told of being a free American as a U.S. Air Force pilot one minute and the next, a prisoner on foreign soil for nearly six years following his capture. The speaker urged the students to value their individual freedoms, to participate in daily life and become active in community and governmental affairs. Shively's appearance was through the efforts of the Lakeland American Legion Post 148." Post Falls Tribune, November 17th, 1983. Photo unattributed.
