Several ground-breakings took place this week celebrating the construction of three new libraries. According to Kootenai County Libraries co-director Lee Starr, new Libraries will be bult in Hayden Lake, Spirit Lake, Athol, and Rathdrum. A special levy was passed by a majority of 84 percent in 1991, allowing the new buildings with updated systems.

Ground-breakings were held in Hayden Lake, Spirit Lake and Athol. The Rathdrum building has not been bid out, pending notification of grant monies, recently received. Bids for the Rathdrum Library will be accepted June 9.

completion of the Spirit Lake and Athol libraries is scheduled for the end of August, with Hayden Lake to be completed mid-September. Each of the new libraries will offer public access to new computers, and will use the new On Line Public Access, a computerized card system for finding information, allowing access to all branches.

Both Spirit Lake and Athol deeded property to their library branch, and the new buildings will be located next to the existing branches. Hayden Lake will be an addition to the present branch. Rathdrum will build north of the First Security Bank.

Starr takes pride in the progress of the building program saying, "The people have given such good support to this project."

The Spirit Lake ground-breaking was attended by four classes from the Spirit Lake Elementary along with Mayor Paul Corbin. Mayor Gene Hill of Athol was in attendance at Athol along with other spectators. Ground-breaking at Rathdrum will be announced.
